After more than 15 years behind the camera, you would think I’ve photographed just about everywhere. I’ve explored beautiful parks, charming downtowns, hidden nature trails, elegant wedding venues, and countless meaningful places for my couples. Yet somehow, one iconic Detroit location had always escaped my portfolio. The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA).

Chloe and Noah’s engagement session felt like new experience for me. As a photographer, there are locations you’ve admired from afar for years, imagining all the creative possibilities. Seeing other photograph couples and individuals and dreaming of booking your shoot at that location. Even wondering why no one ever asks! Always ask! The DIA was one of those places for me, and it absolutely exceeded every expectation. Why the Detroit Institute of Arts is Perfect for Engagement Photos

From the moment we arrived, I couldn’t stop smiling. The bright white marble, grand staircases, ornate architecture, historic bronze doors, and timeless columns create a backdrop that feels effortlessly elegant. Every little corner and spot of the property felt like a dream.

What I loved most was how the architecture complements a couple without overpowering them. Instead of competing for attention, the building frames each moment beautifully, allowing genuine emotion to remain the focus. The bright white and marble tiles that cover the building act as a natural reflector and make everything gorgeous and perfectly exposed.

Chloe and Noah also made the whole session incredibly easy.

Chloe and Noah chose a look that perfectly matched the sophistication of the location.

Chloe wore a stunning white dresses that felt modern, chic, and timeless all at once, while Noah kept things classic with a black suit and soft gray shirt. Together, they looked like they stepped out of an editorial magazine, but their personalities brought warmth and authenticity to every image.

They laughed and enjoyed the time together. Although sometimes we are all awkward at posing, they still walked up the marble staircase, shared quiet moments leaning against the balustrades, and couldn’t stop smiling every time they looked at each other, looking so natural in the photos. Those are always my favorite moments the ones that aren’t posed but simply happen. If you feel awkward, trust the process.

Why was is an “experience” for me?

One of my favorite things about photography is that no matter how many years you’ve been doing it, there’s always something new to experience.

Even after photographing couples for over a decade and a half, I found myself genuinely excited exploring this location for the first time. I was constantly looking around saying, “Oh my goodness… we have to use this staircase,” or “Wait until you see this doorway!”

That’s one of the reasons I still love this career so much. Every new location reignites that creative spark. It reminds me why I picked up a camera in the first place. Photography started as a hobby for me. Now its a full time career, sure, but it’s still my favorite hobby!

The DIA inspired me to slow down, look at light differently, and create images that feel both romantic and artistic.

Golden Hour at the DIA

As the evening light softened, the entire property transformed.

The warm sunlight spilling across the marble steps gave everything a soft glow that felt almost cinematic. We ended the session with some of my favorite images of the evening…some detail photos of that gorgeous ring, soft forehead touches, and close up images of the couple.

Those final moments reminded me that incredible photographs aren’t just about beautiful locations.

They’re about connection.

It’s funny how a place can stay on your photography bucket list for years, and then after one session you immediately start dreaming about returning.

Now that I’ve finally photographed at the Detroit Institute of Arts, I can honestly say I hope this is only the beginning. Whether it’s an engagement session, bridal portraits, anniversary photos, or even wedding day portraits, this location has quickly become one of my favorite places in Metro Detroit.
